Shree Cement to enter ready-mix concrete sector
26 July 2023India: Shree Cement plans to set up a ready-mix concrete network in its resident Indian market. The network will consist of five ready-mix batching plants. The Business Standard newspaper has reported that the cement company expects to commission the new concrete capacity before the end of the current financial year on 31 March 2024.
Ecocem to supply ACT alternative cement to POINT.P
13 July 2023France: Ireland-based Ecocem has entered into a new agreement with Saint-Gobain's France-based concrete subsidiary POINT.P. Under the agreement, Ecocem will supply its ACT alternative cement for use in POINT.P's precast and ready-mix concrete production. Ecocem said that the partnership is an opportunity for it to develop and market new low-carbon binders.
Ecocem executive director Olivier Guise said "This partnership with POINT.P is a natural extension of the alliance announced with the Saint-Gobain Group in October 2022. The shared objective is to accelerate the widespread deployment of low-carbon cements in France, both in the ready-mix concrete and precast concrete markets. By paving the way for the replacement of current traditional cements with ACT technology, our partner POINT.P has a real opportunity to meet its ambitious carbon reduction targets by 2030. We are firmly committed to this partnership and to working with a partner who shares our ambitions for rapid decarbonisation of the construction industry."
Ecocem is 25% owned by France-based Saint-Gobain.
France: Lafarge France is participating in a 76-unit housing development project called Recygénie, at Gennevilliers in Hauts-de-Seine. Lafarge France will supply the project with 100% recycled concrete for use in facades, interior walls and roof slabs. It produced 2000t of 100% recycled 'clinker' at its Altkirch cement plant in Haut-Rhin during a suspension of ordinary clinker production in 2022. It has produced 1600m3 of recycled concrete to date. The concrete won the New Materials Prize at L'Usine Nouvelle's Sustainable Industry Awards 2023.
The Recygénie housing project is due for delivery in late 2024.
Philippines: Holcim Philippines and Sungshin Cement have signed a memorandum of understanding whereby Holcim Philippines will be priority supplier of cement for use in Sungshin Cement's ready-mix concrete operations in the Philippines, InPR News has reported. South Korea-based Sungshin Cement is anticipating growing demand from infrastructure projects, partly due to a US$3bn development loan agreement between the government of the Philippines and South Korea.
CRH to acquire Buzzi’s Ukrainian business
21 June 2023Ukraine: Buzzi has agreed to sell its business in Ukraine to Ireland-based CRH for US$109m. The assets additionally include Buzzi’s Slovakian ready-mix concrete business. The Ukrainian business is comprised of the 2Mt/yr Volyn cement plant and 1Mt/yr Nikolajev cement plants, as well as ready-mix concrete operations in Kiev, Nikolajev and Odessa.
Via its local subsidiaries, Italy-based Buzzi Unicem operates five ready-mix concrete batching plants in Ukraine and six in Slovakia.
Cemento Inka to build batching plant in Trujillo
12 June 2023Peru: Cemento Inka says that it plans to build a new ready-mix concrete batching plant in Trujillo, La Libertad Department. Nate's Crest News has reported that the plant will have a capacity of 87,700t/yr and cost US$150,000 to build. Commissioning is scheduled to follow eight weeks after the start of construction. The company, which holds a 4% share in the Peruvian cement market, recorded a 22% year-on-year fall in its concrete, paving and mortar sales during the first quarter of 2023. Over the same comparison period, domestic cement demand dropped by 15%.
Cemento Inka currently produces ready-mix concrete in the south of Peru at Cajamarquilla, Lima Province, while competitor Cementos Pacasmayo serves La Libertad and neighbouring markets in the north.
India: Nuvoco Vistas has commissioned its new Vizag ready-mixed concrete batching plant in Andhra Pradesh. The facility will produce the company's Concreto and Artiste general purpose and decorative ready-mix concretes, as well as its InstaMix bagged ready-mix concrete. The cement company says that the new concrete plant is 'strategically located' to contribute to the transformation of the region into a hub for smart cities and industry. Projects Today news has reported that the Vizag batching plant is the second opened by the company, after another in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
Austria: Alpacem Gruppe subsidiary w&p Beton has commenced construction of a new ready-mixed concrete plant in Klagenfurt, Carinthia. Recovered industrial heat will power operations at the plant, reducing CO2 emissions by 40t/yr. It will also use reduced-CO2 cement supplied by the group's Wietersdorf cement plant. The concrete producer says that the ready-mix concrete plant will cost Euro3m and be ready for commissioning in early 2024.
Cemex to start using electric concrete mixers supplied by Volvo Trucks at ready mixed concrete plant in Berli
13 February 2023Germany: Mexico-based Cemex says that Sweden-based Volvo Trucks has supplied it with the world’s first fully electric and zero-emission heavy concrete mixer truck at a joint event in Berlin. The Volvo FMX electric truck can be used a full day’s work with a single top-up charge. It will start operating at the Berlin Spandau ready-mix concrete plant in Berlin in February 2023. The two companies signed a deal in 2021 to work together on electromobility solutions on mobile construction equipment and trucks, productivity solutions and uptime services.
Cemex’s chief executive officer Fernando A González said “Our partnership with Volvo has tremendous potential to contribute to the decarbonisation of our business. Rolling out our first fully electric ready-mix truck is a strong progress in that direction.”
Cemex and Volvo Group are founding members of the First Movers Coalition, a collaboration between the World Economic Forum and US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, for companies to make purchasing commitments that create market demand for low-carbon technologies.
Volvo Trucks’ portfolio of electric trucks ranges from 16 – 44t and covers a range of applications from city distribution, refuse handling, urban construction transports to regional haulage. Volvo Trucks is a market leader in heavy electric trucks in Europe and the US. The company’s target is that half of its total truck sales will be electric by 2030.
Schwenk Eesti cleared to gain majority stake in Betoonimeister
17 January 2023Estonia: The Estonian Competition Authority has granted permission to Schwenk Eesti to gain a majority stake in ready-mix concrete producer Betoonimeister. Baltic Business Daily News has reported that Betoonimeister's six ready-mix concrete batching plants are located in Tallinn, Tartu, Johvi, Tapa and Parnu.
