CarbiCrete obtains Environmental Product Declaration for cement-free concrete masonry units
21 November 2024Canada: CarbiCrete has obtained the first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its cement-free concrete masonry units (CMUs). The products have specific CO2 emissions of 11.7kg/m3 for the CMUs, 94% below the industry norm of 200kg/m3. FinancialWire News has reported that CarbiCrete’s recipe for the CMUs replaces cement with steel by-products, while also sequestering CO2.
Concrete products company Canal Block is set to commence production of CarbiCrete CMUs at its Port Colborne plant in Ontario in early 2025.
Basilisk debuts Basilisk Self-Healing Concrete in the US
02 October 2024US: Netherlands-based Basilisk has launched its bacterially-enhanced Basilisk Self-Healing Concrete in the US. The product self-heals cracks with new limestone, sealing them shut without the need for additional maintenance.
US: Carbon Limit has announced the launch of CoolCrete, an additive designed to lower the temperature of concrete by over 10°C through advanced thermal emittance and enhanced solar reflectance. The company says that CoolCrete-treated concrete will help to tackle the urban heat island effect. By reducing the proportion of cement in concrete, it also lowers its CO2 emissions by up to 40%. Licensed affiliates Bison Innovative Products and NCP Industries are set to incorporate CoolCrete in commercial and residential concrete products later in 2024.

FP McCann announces €105m capital expenditure plans
15 August 2024UK: Precast concrete producer FP McCann plans to invest €105m in expansions and upgrades to its plants. The plans include the launch of multiple new product lines, including a new decorative paving range, due for launch in September 2024. Another new line will build drainage pipes, complementing its portfolio of concrete products for below-ground applications. Upgrades include the installation of an additional bagging line at a mortars plant. Local press has reported that a total of 100 new jobs will be created as a result.

FP McCann’s unique multi-product load offering has been a fantastic success. Builders’ merchants no longer have to coordinate multiple deliveries of single product loads, each often carrying a part-load surcharge. With the introduction of our new decorative paving range, we can now offer up to eight different products on a single load, and as more products come online we will expand this service further.”
Gerdau Graphene Unveils NanoCONS graphene-based admixtures
15 August 2024Brazil: Gerdau Graphene has launched NanoCONS, a new line of graphene-based admixtures for concrete. Graphene-Info News has reported that NanoCONS increases the durability and strength of concrete, while lowering its CO2 emissions by 20%, according to the developer. Gerdau Graphene noted that the first product in the line, water-based NanoCONS W104, offers faster drying times, making it well-suited to use in precast concrete production.
Australia: Climate Tech Cement and Polevine are due to showcase a newly developed reduced-CO2 geopolymer concrete in a ‘major infrastructure project’ in Western Australia. Proactive News has reported that the partners will supply backing blocks for the project later in July 2024.
The joint venture aims to develop geopolymer concrete formulations to achieve strengths of 10MPa, 20MPa, 30MPa and 40MPa and to assess their performance and costs.
Cemex USA launches Vertua® concrete in Florida
20 June 2024US: Cemex USA has launched its Vertua® range of reduced-CO2 concrete in Florida. The producer marked the launch with the announcement of a major residential construction supply contract with Rockwell Construction in Sarasota County. The project, for developer Mattamy Homes, is called Brightmore.
Cemex’s US regional president said "We are thrilled to bring Vertua® to Florida and collaborate on Mattamy Homes' new residential endeavour in Sarasota County. This product represents a significant leap forward in sustainable construction, helping set a higher standard for environmentally responsible building practices not only in the region, but throughout the country."
Nuvoco Vistas inaugurates second ready-mix concrete batching plant
23 February 2024India: Nuvoco Vistas has inaugurated its second ready-mix concrete plant, at Ranipur Milki Chak in Bihar’s Patna District. The producer said that the plant, called Patna-II, is strategically positioned for access both to local cement plants and the urban concrete market of Patna. The plant commands 60m3/hr of capacity and is equipped with a twin shaft mixer capable of producing all grades of concrete. Its products include Nuvoco Vistas’ XCON, CONCRETO, Light Weight Concrete, Fibre Enriched Concrete, High Strength Concrete, Water and Crack Resistant Concrete, Foundation Expert Concrete, ECODURE Green Concrete, ARTISTE Decorative Concrete Floors, and INSTAMIX Ready-to-Use Bagged Concrete.
Chief of the ready-mix concrete and modern building materials Prashant Jha said "The launch of the Patna-II plant underscores Nuvoco's dedication to providing innovative solutions to meet the evolving needs of the construction industry in Bihar. This new facility will not only strengthen our presence in the region but also enable us to serve our customers more efficiently."
Holcim Argentina launches Tector additives
10 January 2024Argentina: Holcim Argentina has launched a new line of liquid additives under the brand Tector. The line encompasses two products: Tector Hydrophobic 1230 reduces permeability in cementitious mortars, improving workability and corrosion resistance, while Tector Latex 1700 enhances adhesion, flexibility and plasticity in various applications, reducing surface cracking and flaking.
Vertua concrete for new airport terminal
24 November 2023Mexico: Cemex is supplying Vertua lower-CO2 concrete for the construction of Terminal 2 at Puerto Vallarta’s International Airport, which aims to be one of the most sustainable terminal buildings in Latin America. The 68,000m2 new terminal will be one of the most efficient in terms of sustainability, with the aim of obtaining LEED certification and minimising the CO2 emissions associated with the construction process. Cemex will contribute more than 85,000m3 of Vertua concrete, which will avoid the emission of 16,000t of CO2 compared to traditional concretes.
