Premier Concrete Products to install concrete pipes unit at Livingston Parish concrete plant
04 October 2024US: Premier Concrete Products is expanding its Livingston Parish concrete plant in Louisiana with the construction of a new concrete pipes production unit. The company plans to invest US$10m in the line. It will employ 33 workers when operational later in 2024. It will be equipped with an automated concrete batching system, ‘high-level’ curing equipment and overhead cranes.
President Cody Colvin said “We are excited about the partnership we have with the Livingston Parish community.” He added, “This expansion will add jobs and will serve to satisfy a shortage of precast concrete infrastructure that currently exists in Louisiana and the Southern US. We are very excited to work with Livingston Parish President Randy Delatte and the whole Livingston community.”
Basilisk debuts Basilisk Self-Healing Concrete in the US
02 October 2024US: Netherlands-based Basilisk has launched its bacterially-enhanced Basilisk Self-Healing Concrete in the US. The product self-heals cracks with new limestone, sealing them shut without the need for additional maintenance.
Global Cement and Concrete Association launches Concrete in Life 2024 – 2025 photography competition
27 September 2024US: The Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) has launched the sixth annual Concrete in Life photography competition for 2024 – 2025. The launch coincides with The Climate Group’s New York Climate Week (NYCW) 2024. The GCCA will receive photo entries showing concrete’s sustainability, beauty and vitality, and a panel of judges will award a US$10,000 prize to the best. Past entries are currently on display in New York, US, at the One Vanderbilt building.
GCCA CEO Thomas Guillot said "The GCCA is leading pioneering work with our members to decarbonise our essential industry. Our Concrete in Life competition gives every community across the globe a chance to show just how essential concrete is to our lives and building a more sustainable world. It was important to give people attending NYCW a chance to see the role that concrete plays in supporting society and communities across the planet."
Judge and co-chair of design and architecture firm Gensler Diane Hoskins said "The places and spaces where we spend our time shape our experience of the world. Concrete is one of the most versatile and ubiquitous building materials, opening up an incredible opportunity for innovation and creativity. As architects and designers, we strive to achieve beauty, function and resilience in our work. This is the power and promise of the built environment and the materials that bring it to life."
Fellow judge Tina Paillet, president of the UK-based Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), said "As the globally renowned professional body for the built and natural environment, RICS members know just how important concrete is to modern infrastructure and to meeting the world’s net zero targets via the circular economy. I’m looking forward to judging this year’s Concrete in Life competition and getting the chance to see many awe-inspiring photographs from around the world."
Premier Graphene completes tests of graphene-enhanced concrete with prospective buyer
27 September 2024US: A ‘leading global building materials producer’ has independently validated Premier Graphene’s claimed 32% increase in the tensile strength of concrete produced using its graphene enhancement technology. Dow Jones Institutional News has reported that the building materials producer will now conduct larger-scale testing prior to possibly entering into initial and long-term supply agreements with Premier Graphene.
Premier Graphene president Pedro Mendez said "We are thrilled with the positive feedback we've received, and we look forward to seeing the results of the further concrete testing which is expected to be confirmed and lead to orders. This could mark a significant milestone for Premier Graphene and our commitment to advancing construction technologies."
Orgain Ready Mix Concrete issued notice over Red River spill
26 September 2024US: Authorities have issued a notice of violation to Orgain Ready Mix Concrete for an alleged spillage of concrete into the Red River near its Clarksville, Tennessee, ready-mix concrete plant. Local press has reported that the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation received reports of materials dumped at a location along the road from the site. A subsequent investigation found ‘cementitious staining’ and ‘solids-laden discharges’ on the riverbank.
US: Carbon Limit has announced the launch of CoolCrete, an additive designed to lower the temperature of concrete by over 10°C through advanced thermal emittance and enhanced solar reflectance. The company says that CoolCrete-treated concrete will help to tackle the urban heat island effect. By reducing the proportion of cement in concrete, it also lowers its CO2 emissions by up to 40%. Licensed affiliates Bison Innovative Products and NCP Industries are set to incorporate CoolCrete in commercial and residential concrete products later in 2024.

US: Princeton University researchers Shashank Gupta and Reza Moini have developed an extra-strength hollow concrete based on the tubular structure of the femur bone. The concrete offers 5.6 times greater strength than conventional concrete by isolating cracks. BGR News has reported that the developments are applicable to commercial concrete production through 3D printing or precast concrete casting.
Dublin City Council enacts Low-Carbon Concrete Code
13 September 2024US: The city council of Dublin, California, has enacted the Low-Carbon Concrete Code, requiring a given reduction in CO2 emissions of all ready-mix concrete used in public and private construction projects. Independent News has reported that suitable alternatives to conventional concrete are locally available and offer cost parity, according to the city council.
Builders Supply Co. announces upcoming Fort Payne concrete block plant
10 September 2024US: Builders Supply Co. plans to invest US$10.6m in the construction of a new concrete block plant in Fort Payne, Alabama. Local press has reported that the plant is scheduled for commissioning in mid-2025 and will employ 10 people.

Cortec launches MCI Technology to protect concrete rebar
10 September 2024US: Chemicals company Cortec has recommended its MCI Technology range of admixtures, surface treatments and speciality solutions for reinforced concrete structures. The products contain amine carboxylates, which migrate through concrete to form a protective layer on steel reinforcements. Cortec says that the product is suited to use in vulnerable desalination plant components such as concrete piping and brine discharge chests. Product include USDA-certified bio-based MCI-2005, which meets ANSI/NSF Standard 61 for drinking water system components.
