US: Ireland-based CRH has acquired California-based aggregates and asphalt producer Dutra Materials. The FT newspaper has reported that the business will join CRH’s Americas Materials Solutions business.

CRH Americas Materials Solutions president Scott Parson said “Following our entry into California earlier this year via the acquisitions of BoDean Company and Northgate Ready Mix, we are excited to expand our presence.”

US: Equity firm Cordatus Capital has completed an investment in Texas-based Titan Ready Mix. Titan Ready Mix produces ready-mix concrete in Cresson, Springtown and Venus to supply the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area. Cordatus Capital says that it aims to accelerate the producer’s regional expansion, including through potential new acquisitions in North Texas.

Cordatus Capital partner Kevin Lippincott said "Although Titan is a relatively new entrant in the Dallas-Fort Worth ready-mix market, CEO Danny Paterson and chief operating officer Jeremy Briggs have already helped position it as the standard for delivering consistent, quality product on time and at fair value."

US: CRH subsidiary Oldcastle Infrastructure has acquired precast concrete company Cook Concrete Products. Cook Concrete Products produces and sells precast elements in California, Oregon and Nevada.

Oldcastle Infrastructure president Jason Jackson said "Adding Cook Concrete Products to our business fills a geographic gap, bringing manufacturing capability and product breadth that will enable Oldcastle Infrastructure to deliver more value to our customers in the region."

Oldcastle Infrastructure president, West Region pipe & precast and stormwater, Matt Clemson said "Cook Concrete Products has extensive market knowledge, established customer relationships and a solid reputation as a provider of high-quality products and outstanding customer service. The addition of Cook Concrete Products strengthens our solutions offering and better positions us as our customers' strategic partner of choice."

US: Novel concretes developer Greencraft has made a patent application for a new method of CO₂ mineralisation using a microporous material containing mineral oxides, like slag. Global Warming Focus News has reported that the method also works for natural hyaloclastite, bottom ash, fly ash, volcanic ash and lava.

Greencraft said that its method marks an ‘improvement’ in current techniques for sequestering CO₂ in alternative materials.

US: Bagged concrete and cement mixes producer Quikrete has submitted an acquisition offer to cement, concrete and aggregates company Summit Materials. Summit Materials is reportedly valued at over US$7bn. The company confirmed to Reuters that its board is in initial discussions over a non-binding acquisition proposal.

Summit Materials combined its business with Cementos Argos subsidiary Argos USA in January 2024.

US: A study by Resource Recycling Systems found that 33% of construction and demolition materials (CDM) entering landfill in Summit County, Colorado, could be effectively diverted into CDM recycling. Concrete and aggregates were among the 11 materials included in the study. Local press has reported that county authorities aim to reuse or recycle 25% of CDM generated locally by 2028, and 50% by 2035. Landfill capacity will run out in 2078.

CDM constituted 30% of Summit County’s landfill intake during the study period.

US: A court in Savannah, Georgia, has sentenced Evans Concrete and four executives for conspiring to fix prices, rig bids and allocate jobs in the local ready-mix concrete business between 2010 until 2016. Foreign Affairs News has reported that Evans Concrete will pay a US$2.7m fine, while alleged co-conspirator Argos USA will pay a US$20m criminal penalty under a deferred prosecution agreement. Of the four individuals, three will serve combined prison sentences of 72 months and pay a total US$210,000 in fines and one received a year’s probation.

The Justice Department’s Antitrust Division said "The Antitrust Division and its law enforcement partners will hold accountable those who seek to exploit the critical need for these materials to harm consumers."

US: Cement mixer truck driver Allard Tigchelar, from Cemex USA’s Prescott, Arizona, ready-mix concrete plant, won gold representing his company at the National Mixer Driver Championship 2024 at the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association’s ConcreteWorks concrete conference in Aurora, Colorado, on 12 – 13 October 2024. Concrete Products News has reported that the championship pitted drivers against one another in an eight-challenge truck driving course designed to test vehicle handling skills. This was followed by vehicle inspection and an exam for drivers. Florida-based Maschmeyer Concrete driver Damion Wynter came second and Illinois-based Ozinga Ready Mix Concrete driver Garret Lytle came third.

Allard Tigchelar claimed US$6000 in prize money from the Truck Mixer Manufacturers Bureau. Wynter won US$3000 and Lytle US$1500.

US: C-Crete Technologies has poured its granite-based cement-free concrete in its first construction application at the upcoming JPMorgan Chase headquarters at 270 Park Avenue, Manhattan. Ecology, Environment and Conservation News has reported that the concrete generates no net CO₂ emissions by sequestering atmospheric CO₂ in its curing process. The concrete conforms to ASTM International standards, with a compressive strength exceeding 5000psi. Other partners on the project included engineering firm Severud Associates Consulting Engineers and construction management firm AECOM Tishman.

C-Crete Technologies president Rouzbeh Savary said "We are thrilled to introduce our new granite-based concrete at such a prestigious and iconic location. The building at 270 Park Avenue is set to become a landmark not only for its architectural grandeur, but also for its sustainable construction practices."

Severud Associates Consulting Engineers senior associate Fortunato Orlando said "The performance of C-Crete for concrete on metal deck, topping slabs, pavements and landscape work, coupled with its eco-friendly attributes, makes it a revolutionary product for the future of the construction industry."

US: Construction and design products company Outdoor Living Supply has acquired Mid-Atlantic Concrete Products (MACP) and South-Atlantic Concrete Products (SACP). MarketLine News has reported that MACP president Ken Armistead will move to an ambassadorial role, while SACP president Rich Kearney will join Outdoor Living Supply in the newly-created position of vice president, commercial and wholesale.

SACP president Rich Kearney said "Outdoor Living Supply provides us with expanded resources and a powerful growth platform, helping us take our commercial sales, talented team, loyal customers and suppliers to new levels."
