Europe: Cemex has enhanced safety across its European Admixtures facilities during 2023 with the implementation of new assistance systems supplied by Linde Material Handling. The systems include a reverse assist camera for forklifts. The group installed the technology at its Salzkotten admixtures plant in Germany and its Rugby admixtures plant in the UK. It will now implement the upgrade at its Alicante admixtures plant in Spain, as well other sites across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) during 2024.

Cemex European regional director of admixtures Dietmar Voetsch said “At Cemex, we are always looking for new processes and innovations to ensure safety in our workplaces. Linde’s safety guard system and reverse assist camera are ideal solutions for occupational safety in our Admixtures plants; we were immediately convinced by the technology and the feedback we’ve received from employees who have used it has been extremely positive. Once the European rollout is complete, we are excited to adapt the technology further for use in our admixtures plants across the wider EMEA region.”

Linde Material Handling safety product manager Fabian Zimmerman said “We’re proud to have supported Cemex with the implementation of both the safety guard system and the reverse assist camera at their European admixtures plants. By installing these systems, the safety of daily situations like loading and unloading lorries or storage can be increased significantly. We provide these solutions as a retrofit; thus, complete fleets can be equipped with these assistance systems.”

Germany: An activist or activists have claimed responsibility for starting a fire that engulfed five trucks, multiple cement silos and part of a building at a Cemex Deutschland ready-mix concrete batching plant in Kreuzberg, Berlin, Zeit Online News has reported.

In a statement posted on news website Indymedia DE, the purported culprit(s) claimed that they targeted the plant for its involvement in supplying concrete for the A100 road expansion project in Berlin. Additionally, the statement alleged that Cemex has supplied concrete for illegal Israeli military checkpoints in Palestine, for which reason the self-proclaimed arsonists chose to target the group’s German subsidiary.

UAE: Cemex introduced its prototype 100% electric concrete mixer truck at the COP28 climate change conference in Dubai on 6 December 2023. The cement and concrete producer said that the prototype can transport a full load of concrete and complete a working day on a single charge. It is fitted with a 350kw battery.

Mexico: Cemex is supplying Vertua lower-CO₂ concrete for the construction of Terminal 2 at Puerto Vallarta’s International Airport, which aims to be one of the most sustainable terminal buildings in Latin America. The 68,000m² new terminal will be one of the most efficient in terms of sustainability, with the aim of obtaining LEED certification and minimising the CO₂ emissions associated with the construction process. Cemex will contribute more than 85,000m³ of Vertua concrete, which will avoid the emission of 16,000t of CO₂ compared to traditional concretes.

Mexico: Property developer Immobiliaria Ancore will use Cemex Mexico’s Vertua reduced-CO₂ concrete in the construction of the upcoming 100-storey Rise Tower in Monterrey. Cemex will supply a high-altitude concrete pouring system for the project. The concrete supplier said that the development aims to secure LEED, WELL, Green Globes, bEQ and NMX-164 certifications.

Cemex Mexico president Ricardo Naya said “We’re honoured to be working on a project that will establish the new standard for sustainable high-rise construction in Latin America. Cemex brings vast experience in sustainable construction, providing lower-carbon building materials, lower-waste practices and zero use of potable water in our concrete production.”

US: Cemex USA supplied water-permeable concrete from its Vertua range for the renovation of the Bryant-Denny American football stadium at the University of Alabama. The producer says that this will reduce the project’s CO₂ emissions by 40%, while also facilitating rainwater harvesting and preventing the stadium’s field from flooding.

US: Cemex USA has poured 18,300m³ of Vertua reduced-CO₂ concrete in the construction of the Centennial Tower at Houston Methodist Hospital in Texas. Cemex USA says that it successfully completed the 20hr pour at the world’s largest medical complex without interrupting surrounding emergency services.

President Jaime Muguiro said “Cemex’s purpose of building a better future comes to life when we participate in projects that improve people’s quality of life, particularly in the area of health services, in the communities in which we serve. Not only are we providing expert logistics and resilient materials, but we are also providing an alternative to lower the carbon footprint of the project with our more sustainable solutions.”

UAE: Cemex UAE and UltraTech Cement UAE have signed an agreement to collaborate on the development of waste concrete recycling in the UAE, according to Dow Jones Institutional News. The cement producers say that their partnership will help to reduce CO₂ emissions from construction, in line with the UAE’s 2050 net zero commitment.

Israel: Cemex’s circular construction subsidiary Regenera has commissioned a construction, demolition and excavation waste recycling plant in Tel Aviv. Cemex said that the plant has the capacity to recycle 500,000t/yr of construction, demolition and excavation waste. Cemex acquired the site following its acquisition of a 51% stake in construction, demolition and excavation waste recycling company SHTANG Recycle, which it integrated into Regenera in early 2023.

Germany: Cemex Zement has bought two iONTRON eMixer electric ready-mix concrete mixer trucks from Putzmeister Group. The ready-mix concrete producer will deploy the vehicles in its Berlin operations, with one based at its Hohenschönhausen batching plant and the other at its Spandau batching plant. The vehicles offer a full eight-hour workday from a single overnight charge. When recharged using renewable energy, they can reduce journey’s CO₂ emissions by 100%. They will also contribute to a reduction in urban air pollution and noise along the routes on which they operate.

Cemex Zement’s director materials Marcel Busch said "We are reducing emissions throughout our value chain, and transport plays an important role in this.” He added “We are investing in the electrification of our vehicle fleet at our sites throughout Germany."
