South Korea: The government has established a committee to decide whether to raise the number of new ready-mix concrete mixer trucks licences in 2025 – 2026. The Maeil Business Newspaper has reported that the rate of licensing has remained level annually since 2009. In the 15-year period up to 2024, total operational ready-mix concrete plants rose by 22% from 893 to 1088. Transport costs in Seoul more than doubled from US$23.70/shipment to US$51.81/shipment – compared to just a 62% rise in ready-mix concrete prices, from US$40.20/m3 to US$65.38/m3. The government noted that 85% of mixer truck drivers are aged 50 or older.
XBE names Chris Wurtz as President of Ready Mix following BCMI merger
US: Software developer XBE has appointed Chris Wurtz its President of Ready Mix. Wurtz will oversee collaborations between XBE's product and engineering teams and ready-mix concrete customers. Wurtz joins XBE from fellow heavy building materials technology supplier Digital Fleet, where he served as Division President. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from South Dakota University in Brookings, South Dakota, and an MBA from the University of Minnesota Duluth.
Wurtz’s appointment follows XBE’s merger with BCMI in June 2025. BCMI President Craig Yeack will now transition away from an operational role. XBE and BCMI together offer an integrated cloud platform for production, despatch, logistics and customer experience for heavy building materials.
Crown Hill Materials ordered to suspend operations at Vallejo ready-mix concrete plant
US: The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has ordered Crown Hill Materials to cease operations at a ready-mix concrete batching plant in Vallejo, California, after it allegedly operated it without an air quality permit. The plant is the larger of two ready-mix concrete plants at a site in the city, the other of which is reportedly exempt.
Silvi Materials to acquire Eagle Rock Concrete
US: Silvi Materials has entered an agreement to acquire North Carolina-based ready-mix concrete producer Eagle Rock Concrete. CityBiz News has reported that the deal is scheduled to close in September 2025. This acquisition marks Silvi Materials' entry into the South East US construction market, via nine ready-mix plants in Durham and Raleigh.
