Poland: Xella Polska supplied its Ytong autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) blocks for the construction of the 174m-high The Bridge skyscraper in Warsaw's Wola District. When inaugurated, the building will be Poland’s tallest, featuring 40 floors of office space. It will be equipped with a Building Energy Management System and be 100% solar powered, making it energy neutral. Xella Polska noted the insulation benefits of Ytong AAC blocks, as well as its increased fire resistance, compared with other building materials.
Belarusian Cement Company more than triples exports of autoclaved aerated concrete blocks to Russia in 2023
12 February 2024Belarus/Russia: Belarusian Cement Company (BCC) increased exports of its autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) blocks to Russia by a factor of more than three year-on-year in 2023. Three units, including the company’s Krasnoselskstroimaterialy building materials plant, contributed to the growth. BeITA News has reported that the increase more than offset the decline in BCC’s foreign sales of AAC blocks following the imposition of international sanctions on Belarus in 2022 for aiding Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine.
Canal Block deploys CarbiCrete cement-free concrete technology at Port Colborne concrete block plant
15 January 2024Canada: Concrete block producer Canal Block has integrated CarbiCrete’s cement-free concrete production technology at its Port Colborne plant in Ontario. CarbiCrete’s technology produces concrete from steel slag. The integration at the Port Colborne plant commands US$2.24m-worth of funding from the global innovation cluster NGen, towards a total project cost of US$5.97m.
CarbiCrete CEO Chris Stern said "We are tremendously grateful for NGen's continued support, which is helping Canada position itself as the undisputed world leader in low carbon concrete."
Canal Block president Durk Bylsma said "Canal Block has had a long history of developing sustainable products for the masonry industry. We are excited to partner with CarbiCrete to bring this truly revolutionary technology to market and further our commitment to be an ecologically and socially responsible manufacturer."
Russia: Belarus-based Belarusian Cement Company plans to establish a building materials production and logistics hub in Moscow. Among other materials, the hub will produce dry mixes using cement imported from Belarus, as well as producing ready-mix concrete, autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) blocks and reinforced concrete goods. Business World News has reported that the facility will be equipped with rail and road terminals.
Belarusian Cement Company said "The creation of this facility will secure permanent availability of Belarusian Cement Company products directly in the sales region and will enable more advantageous logistic conditions for Russian partners. Belarusian Cement Company will be able to significantly expand its capabilities for delivering products to consumers that have no access to the railway grid and will be able to introduce a more convenient and accessible level of client service."
Holcim Romania expands Abjud autoclaved aerated concrete block plant
16 November 2023Romania: Holcim Romania invested Euro15m in an upgrade to its Abjud autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) block plant in Vrancea, using equipment supplied by AAC specialist Aircrete Europe. The producer says that the project raised the production capacity of the plant by 45%.
Holcim Romania CEO Bogdan Dobre said "The investment involved the automation of processes in order to harmonise operations with Holcim standards, but also to bring our customers the best performing products. With the investment, the previous production line, almost 50 years old, was completely replaced.” He continued “We have rethought the entire industrial process, making it more efficient and increasing the degree of safety at work.”
UK: SigmaRoc subsidiary CCP has launched Greenbloc Standard, Ultra and Premium. The new designations correspond to 50%, 80% and 100% cement substitution. Professional Builder News has reported that Using Greenbloc Standard reduces structures’ CO2 emissions by 77% compared with structures built with conventional ordinary Portland cement (OPC)-based blocks. For an average semi-detached house, this is equivalent to 2.7t of CO2.
CCP general manager Phil Rotheram said “The expansion of our Greenbloc range continues our commitment to sustainable alternatives to our product offering as we fully commit to the challenges of removing embodied carbon from the built environment.”

Siam Cement Big Bloc Construction Technologies to build new concrete panel and block plant
06 December 2022India: Siam Cement Big Bloc Construction Technologies has bought 60,000m3 of land at Ramosadi in Gujarat's Kheda District. The concrete producer informed the BSE Exchange that it plans to build an autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) panel and block plant at the site.
HIL to acquire Fast Build Block
01 August 2022India: CK Birla Group’s fibre cement roofing subsidiary HIL has agreed to acquire Fast Build Blocks for US$8.22m in a ‘slump sale.’ Fast Build Blocks produces autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) blocks in Cuttack, Odisha. Press Trust of India News has reported that HIL is using the acquisition to establish a leadership position in the Eastern Indian market.
