UAE: Fujairah Building Industries’ sales rose by 14% year-on-year to US$40.4m in the first nine months of 2024, from US$35.4m in the corresponding period of 2023. As a result, the producer grew its net profit by 39%, from US$3.31m to US$4.61m.
UAE: Azizi Developments has poured 22,000m3 of concrete over 56 consecutive hours at the site of its upcoming Azizi Venice housing development in Dubai. TradeArabia News has reported that Azizi Venice will comprise 36,000 residential units, spread over 100 tower blocks and 109 houses.
Chair Mirwais Azizi said "The quality and speed at which our developments manifest from vision into reality fills us with immense pride. This extensive, record-breaking two-day concrete pour, which is the largest of its kind in the UAE, exemplifies – and serves as a testament to – the fast pace of our latest community project."
Saint-Gobain to acquire Fosroc
28 June 2024UAE: France-based Saint-Gobain has entered a definitive agreement to acquire construction chemicals producer Fosroc for US$1.03bn. Fosroc produces concrete admixtures, sealants and waterproofing products. It operates 20 plants and employs 3000 people, with a strong presence in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. Completion of the deal is expected by 30 June 2025.
Saint-Gobain chair and CEO Benoit Bazin said "The acquisition of Fosroc is perfectly aligned with our Grow & Impact strategic plan: it is a unique opportunity for Saint-Gobain to further reinforce its worldwide presence in construction chemicals, and to strengthen its presence in high-growth emerging markets, in particular in India and the Middle East. UAE: Saint-Gobain Weber has installed a new system at its Abu Dhabi mortars plant to recover dust from its crusher and re-inject it into the plant’s raw materials stream. This is part of a package of upgrades to lower the Abu Dhabi plant’s consumption of virgin materials, which also reduced its generation of waste by 4380t/yr between 2019 and 2023. The L’Usine Nouvelle newspaper has reported that other investments included the electrification of the plant’s forklift fleet.
Saint-Gobain reduced its Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 14%, its non-recycled waste by 78% and its water footprint by 10% in the Middle East between 2017 and 2023.
Cemex launches electric concrete mixer truck
07 December 2023UAE: Cemex introduced its prototype 100% electric concrete mixer truck at the COP28 climate change conference in Dubai on 6 December 2023. The cement and concrete producer said that the prototype can transport a full load of concrete and complete a working day on a single charge. It is fitted with a 350kw battery.
UAE: Dubai Municipality has launched the world's first system for certification and conformity marks in the field of 3D printing in the construction industry. The Municipality says that this will serve as a proactive measure to streamline procedures and improve the quality of concrete mixes used in factories licensed and operating in the Emirate and that it will play a ‘pivotal role’ to advance Dubai’s leading position for cutting-edge and sustainable construction technology.
Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said “The certification and conformity mark system for factories and entities operating in the field of 3D printing for construction has been comprehensively established in alignment with Dubai Municipality’s proactive vision. This system embraces international best practices to provide exceptional services to both individuals and the community, thereby enhancing Dubai's global reputation and aligning with Dubai Municipality’s strategic objectives outlined in Dubai's 2030 Plan. Additionally, the system supports Dubai’s 3D printing strategy, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The strategy aims to utilise technology for the advancement of humanity and position the UAE and Dubai as prominent regional and global hubs for 3D printing technology.”
Alia Al Harmoodi, chief executive officer of the Environment, Health, and Safety Agency at Dubai Municipality, highlighted that the main focus of the new system includes assessing product and raw material quality, ensuring the efficiency of manufacturing equipment and machinery, defining technical standards of manufacturing operations at every stage of production, and ensuring efficiency of management systems within factories.
UAE: Cemex UAE and UltraTech Cement UAE have signed an agreement to collaborate on the development of waste concrete recycling in the UAE, according to Dow Jones Institutional News. The cement producers say that their partnership will help to reduce CO2 emissions from construction, in line with the UAE’s 2050 net zero commitment.
Cemex Vertua contract for major UAE port
06 September 2023UAE: Cemex will supply more than 200,000m3 of its Vertua low-carbon concrete for the development of major infrastructure at the Khalifa Port expansion, currently being undertaken by Khalifa Port’s parent company AD Ports Group. Khalifa Port chose the product due to its ability to achieve up to a 70% reduction in CO2 emissions, without loss of performance.
The mega-project is located between Abu Dhabi and Dubai and serves 25 shipping lines. It is a multipurpose 18.5m deep-water port with a total of 10.6km of berths that include two container terminals, a general cargo and dry bulk facility, a logistics port, a liquid bulk terminal and a roll on - roll off terminal.
