Spain: Cemex España has purchased two additional electric concrete mixer trucks (e-mixers) for its fleet. Alimarket-Construcción News has reported that one e-mixer will operate at the San Fernando ready-mix concrete batching plant in Madrid and the other at the Sant Just ready-mix concrete batching plant in Barcelona.

Spain: Ready-mixed concrete production in Spain reached 26.3Mm³ in 2023, representing a year-on-year increase of 5.6% and the highest level in 12 years, according to the Spanish National Association of Ready-Mixed Concrete Manufacturers (ANEFHOP). In the last quarter, production grew to 6.38Mm³, a year-on-year increase of 5.8%.

Spain: Bio-Ecomatter, a company based in Extremadura, has launched a new sustainable mortar product without cement or sand, using agro-industrial waste as raw material. This product was developed by founders Carmen Tristancho and Lorena Rodríguez, along with Juanjo Tejado and Marisa Carmona from the Institute of Ornamental Rocks and Building Materials.

Bio-Ecomatter's product composition remains confidential. Beyond reducing reliance on traditional materials like cement, it promotes environmental sustainability by utilising agro-industrial waste. Carmen Tristancho, who heads the innovation department at an environmental engineering firm in Badajoz and co-created the product, revealed that the mortar includes hydraulic lime and agro-industrial waste. The mortar reportedly has a 40% higher performance than standard mortar and is half the density. It has the same texture and workability as conventional mortar, with a formula that minimises carbon emissions and lessens reliance on non-renewable raw materials.

The project, while not aiming to replace traditional mortar, introduces alternative sustainable construction methods. Bio-Ecomatter's product won the sustainable construction award from Metabuilding, an EU-funded project supporting SMEs in the construction sector. Tristancho reveals they are also working on projects using recycled plastic moulds filled with their Bio-Ecomatter mortar.

Tristancho said "We are women in a field very centred on cement and sand, so introducing a new material in construction can be met with scepticism."

Spain: Heidelberg Materials and construction firm Viuda de Sainz plan to open a construction and demolition waste (CDW) recycling and slag grinding plant in Güeñes, Basque Country. The plant, called Harri Green, will be situated in Heidelberg Materials' existing Zaramillo limestone quarry. It processing capacities will be 140,000t/yr CDW and 20,000t/yr steel slag, with which it will produce aggregates. The cost of the plant is Euro2m.

Spain: Switzerland-based Holcim has acquired a majority stake in precast concrete systems producer Arterpref. Holcim says that Artepref’s smart design systems combined with its own range of low-carbon and circular solutions will help Spain’s fast-growing construction sector to build better with less.

Holcim’s Europe regional head Miljan Gutovic said “Fully in line with our strategy, this expands our range of innovative and sustainable solutions in high-growth markets.”

Spain: Topcret has added to two new products to its decorative microcement coatings range. BabaxEco and EcoCemento both comprise cement, fine sand, polymers and pigments. Topcret was the first microcement coatings producer to obtain environmental product declarations (EPDs) for its products.

Spain: Holcim has introduced its EcoPact Prime concrete and mortar range, following a strong reception in other European markets, including Switzerland, Germany and France. The EcoPact Prime range is presented as a sustainable portfolio of concrete and mortar products offering a 70% reduction in CO₂ compared to equivalents based on ordinary Portland cement (OPC).

Manuel Barrero, director of the concrete activity at LafargeHolcim Spain, said “Decarbonisation is a fundamental pillar of our business strategy. Therefore, in our objective to develop materials and solutions that allow us to build better with less, we are going one step further by introducing this new product to the Spanish market.”

All the products in the EcoPact Prime range have their own Environmental Product Declarations (EPD). They incorporate low-emission cements, also from the EcoPlanet range, selected aggregates, additions, water, special additives and use electrical energy generated from renewable sources in their manufacture.

The products are intended for the construction of all structural elements, including beams, walls, floors, foundations or pillars, as well as self-compacting structures, those that need to drain and those that need to exhibit particular aesthetic qualities.

Spain: Votorantim Cimentos Spain has completed its acquisition of Heidelberg Materials' businesses in the south of Spain. Under the deal, Votorantim Cimentos Spain gains control of FYM's 1.6Mt/yr Málaga cement plant, as well as three aggregates quarries and 11 ready-mix concrete plants in Andalusia.

Brazil-based Votorantim Cimentos' Europe, Asia and Africa CEO Jorge Wagner said “This acquisition is fully aligned with our strategy, reinforces our presence in the Iberian Peninsula to better serve our customers and creates significant synergies with our existing assets. Besides this, it will be key to accelerating our decarbonisation journey to achieve our 2030 Sustainability Commitments."

Votorantim Cimentos Spain operates a mortar plant and multiple concrete batching and aggregates plants across Andalusia, the Canary Islands, Castile and León, Extremadura and Galicia.

Spain: CRH’s Catalonian ready-mix concrete subsidiary Beton Catalan has partnered with Grapheno Smart Materials in order to implement the latter’s graphene technology in its high-performance concrete products.

Beton Catalan’s quality director Alberto Arenillas said that the company’s high-performance concrete products require ‘a significant amount of CEM I cement,’ He said “By introducing the graphene additive, the nominal amounts of this cement can be reduced or changed to cement with a lower carbon footprint, improving its performance.” The company will sell the graphene-enriched concrete under its BeGreen reduced-CO₂ products label.

Spain: Cemex España has supplied concrete from its Vertua Plus range for the construction of an 81-home housing development in Madrid. The estate, called Torrejón Park, will be Spain’s first to be built entirely from Vertua reduced-CO₂ cement. Cemex España says that the products used offer 50 – 70% lower CO2¬ emissions than ordinary concrete. Developer Neinor Homes will additionally recover over 80% of construction waste for recycling.
