CarbiCrete completes equipment installation at Patio Drummond’s Drummondville concrete plant
20 December 2024Canada: CarbiCrete has installed new equipment at Patio Drummond's Drummondville plant for the production of concrete using its cement-free technology. The technology mineralises captured CO2 for sequestration inside the product.
CarbiCrete secures financing from Meta
13 December 2024Canada: CarbiCrete has entered into a new ‘financing collaboration’ with US-based social media group Meta for its installation of CarbiCrete equipment at Canal Block’s Drummond concrete plant in Ontario. Climate consultancy 3Degrees will verify Canal Block’s CO2 emissions reductions per the terms of the financing collaboration.
CarbiCrete obtains Environmental Product Declaration for cement-free concrete masonry units
21 November 2024Canada: CarbiCrete has obtained the first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its cement-free concrete masonry units (CMUs). The products have specific CO2 emissions of 11.7kg/m3 for the CMUs, 94% below the industry norm of 200kg/m3. FinancialWire News has reported that CarbiCrete’s recipe for the CMUs replaces cement with steel by-products, while also sequestering CO2.
Concrete products company Canal Block is set to commence production of CarbiCrete CMUs at its Port Colborne plant in Ontario in early 2025.

Canada: Climate technology company CarbonCure Technologies has announced that it has ‘saved’ over 500,000t of CO₂ across 7.5m truckloads of concrete. CarbonCure uses a technology that injects captured CO₂ into fresh concrete, which is mineralised and permanently stored, and which enables concrete producers to reduce cement usage while maintaining strength. The solution integrates into existing concrete plant operations, allowing for both environmental benefits via a reduced CO₂ footprint and cost savings through reduced cement consumption, according to the company. The company also claims that for every 1t of CO2 that is mineralised in ready mix concrete, another 50t of CO₂ is ‘avoided’ by reducing emissions from cement adjustments.
CEO of CarbonCure Technologies Rob Niven said “This milestone reflects the strong sustainability leadership of CarbonCure’s innovative concrete producer partners. Together, we are proving that reducing the carbon footprint of concrete is not just a goal for the future — it can happen, and it is happening, today at scale.”
Canada: Canal Block will begin to produce CarbiCrete's cement-free concrete products under licence from 2025. The partners say that they have installed a new curing system for the purpose at Canal Block’s Port Colborne plant. Innovation cluster NGen awarded them US$4.04m in funding for the project.
Canal Block president Durk Bylsma said "We look forward to offering a carbon-negative masonry unit to Ontario's construction market in 2025.”
CEO Jacob Homiller said "We are tremendously pleased to bring our cement-free concrete technology to Ontario through Canal Block."

Lakeshore Concrete to build new premixed concrete plant in Essex County
05 September 2024Canada: Lakeshore Concrete is constructing a new premixed concrete plant in Essex County, set to create 30 to 35 jobs and begin operations in early 2025. The new premixed plant in Amherstburg aims to improve product consistency and reduce carbon emissions, distinguishing it from the typical dry mix plants found throughout Ontario and North America, according to John Vanderwerf, co-owner of Lakeshore Concrete. This plant, along with existing facilities in Tecumseh and Leamington, will allow the company to produce about 200m3/hr of concrete. Vanderwerf is awaiting final calculations on environmental benefits, including reductions in carbon emissions achieved by using electric motors for mixing concrete instead of diesel-powered truck drums.
Vanderwerf said "With the new employment coming and the growing population, we feel there's reason to be optimistic about this area and that's why we're investing now."
