Partanna to build four new carbon negative binder plants
30 January 2024Middle East/North America: Climate tech start-up Partanna has announced plans for four new plants to produce its carbon negative binder. The plants will be located in the Bahamas, the US and the Gulf region.
Partanna said that the development demonstrates its growing momentum as a construction sector disruptor, offering a sustainable, cost-comparable alternative to cement for users of concrete.
TopWerk Group endorses Partanna Global's carbon-negative binder
23 January 2024Germany/US: Concrete production equipment supplier TopWerk Group has formally endorsed Partanna Global's carbon-negative binder as a replacement for cement in the production of concrete using its equipment. Partanna plans to install TopWerk equipment at its four upcoming production plants, under an exclusive three-year agreement. The endorsement is intended to help shift TopWerk's global customers from using cement to using Partanna Global’s binder.
Partanna Global CEO Rick Fox said “TopWerk's endorsement of Partanna represents a major vote of confidence in our technology from one of the most respected names in global construction. We’re humbled and proud that one of the world’s leading concrete machinery producers has given us their backing. We hope this signals to the industry that Portland cement is no longer the only solution in town, and that the days of burning rocks are fast coming to an end.”

The endorsement follows Saudi Arabia-based property developer ROSHN's announcement of an upcoming carbon-negative concrete plant that will use Partanna Global's technology earlier in January 2024.
C-Crete Technologies pours zeolite-based concrete in Seattle
08 December 2023US: C-Crete Technologies poured its zeolite-based concrete for the construction of a 20t slab-on-grade foundation and set of steps in Seattle. The concrete uses zeolite as a binder, removing the need for cement.

C-Crete Technologies celebrates commercial debut of its binder in cement-free concrete pour in Seattle
19 July 2023US: C-Crete Technologies supplied its binder for a pour of 60t of cement-free concrete at a construction site in Seattle, Washington. CNNW News has reported that the binder replaces cement, eliminating 1t of CO2 emissions per tonne of concrete.
C-Crete Technologies president Rouzbeh Savary said "We are thrilled to introduce our cement-free concrete, a game-changer in sustainable construction.” He added “Given that our product meets industry standards and has cost-parity with conventional concrete, it opens up an entirely new era in construction."
Ecocem to supply ACT alternative cement to POINT.P
13 July 2023France: Ireland-based Ecocem has entered into a new agreement with Saint-Gobain's France-based concrete subsidiary POINT.P. Under the agreement, Ecocem will supply its ACT alternative cement for use in POINT.P's precast and ready-mix concrete production. Ecocem said that the partnership is an opportunity for it to develop and market new low-carbon binders.
Ecocem executive director Olivier Guise said "This partnership with POINT.P is a natural extension of the alliance announced with the Saint-Gobain Group in October 2022. The shared objective is to accelerate the widespread deployment of low-carbon cements in France, both in the ready-mix concrete and precast concrete markets. By paving the way for the replacement of current traditional cements with ACT technology, our partner POINT.P has a real opportunity to meet its ambitious carbon reduction targets by 2030. We are firmly committed to this partnership and to working with a partner who shares our ambitions for rapid decarbonisation of the construction industry."
Ecocem is 25% owned by France-based Saint-Gobain.
Finland: Betolar has signed a cooperation agreement with concrete producer Consolis Parma to develop reduced-CO2 hollow concrete slabs. The development process will implement Betolar's Geoprime binder into Consolis Parma's concrete production. Consolis Parma is committed to halving its CO2 emissions between 2021 and 2035.
Consolis Parma's Technology Director Juha Rämö said “The use of alternative new binder combinations and additives that ensure the efficiency of the manufacturing process are key factors in achieving our climate goals. We are actively seeking new channels to address these challenges. The cooperation with Betolar is an important new partnership for us."
Betolar patents mining waste-based binder
10 June 2022Finland: Betolar has patented a method for producing binder from the by-products of metal extraction. The method uses metallic effluent, sludge and dregs generated by the bioleaching of ores.
Chief innovation officer Juha Leppänen said “The ability to produce new solutions for the utilisation of sidestreams is essential to the functioning of our ecosystem. Betolar has a rapidly growing patent portfolio considering its age. We have already obtained approved patents for five inventions of ours.” He added “Waste materials, such as gypsum sludge, can also be used in other construction applications which will be of great value to Betolar's business in the future.”
Cementir launches Aalborg InBind binder in Europe
01 June 2022Europe: Italy-based Cementir has launched Aalborg InBind, a premixed white binder for ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) applications. The supplier said that Aalborg InBind optimizes UHPC producers' costs by leveraging locally available materials.
Group chief sales, marketing and commercial development officer Michele Di Marino said “The specific needs of local projects have led precast concrete producers to look for their own UHPC by using local aggregates and chemical admixtures." He added "InBind is set to meet the market needs by providing a flexible and user-friendly binder solution.”
